About the Artist

Richard Dewey
Richard Dewey grew up in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania and studied at Allegheny College in Meadville PA and at the School of Visual Arts in New York City. He taught at The Chapin School in New York and at Lincoln School in San José, Costa Rica before becoming head of the Visual Arts Department at Providence Day School in Charlotte, NC.
Richard twice won the Eichenbrenner Master Teacher Award at Providence Day: in 2014 to investigate the work of Spanish artists in Spain, and in 2019 to study Japanese art and culture in Kyoto, Japan. Notable residencies that have influenced Richard’s art include a summer at the Vermont Studio Center in 1992 and three weeks at the Les Tapies Art Teachers Workshop in St. Pierresville, France in 2016.
Richard left teaching in 2024 to devote more time to his art. He splits time between his studios in Charlotte and Costa Rica, and his work ranges from small still lifes and plein air pieces to large scale abstract and figurative work.
Richard is a member of the Guild of Charlotte Artists and of Pintal, a plein-air group in Costa Rica.
Richard is available for workshops and one-on-one mentoring.
